A £150,000 investment in a 4000-gallon Whale Tankers combination unit has been made by Jet Aire Drain Care Limited of Leeds.
Based on a 32 tonne Scania 8 x 4 chassis, the high volume JetVac tanker can remove waste from up to 30 metres deep by means of its powerful 1500 cfm Robuschi blower. A high performance Pratissoli MH60 jetting pump working simultaneously with the blower combines sewer cleaning and waste removal.
The mild steel tank is built to comply with all current regulations covering pressure vessels, including the Pressure Equipment Directive. Waste material is discharged operating a three-stage tipping ram and pressuring-off with a Mistral 4 series 245 cfm pump. The use of a stainless steel tank lining also aids discharge, particularly of heavier and drier waste. A hydraulically operated rear door and door clamps make the tanker safe and user-friendly.
In specifying the blowing equipment particular attention has been paid to achieving low noise levels during operation. This is the first time that an Italian made Robuschi pump has been fitted to a Whale JetVac and it was chosen for its quality and low noise level. Measurements have shown it to be considerably quieter than other typical installations.
It is vital to satisfy health and safety regulations not only to have a reduction in the noise level but also to remove harmful sound waves. Noise is also a major factor when the vehicle is being used in residential areas. Although the Robuschi pump is very quiet, housing it inside an acoustic cabinet further reduces noise.
The Pratissoli jetting pump, delivering up to 312 lpm at 156 bar, uses a fully-hydraulic, self-aligning hose reel mounted at the rear of the tank and with a capacity of up to 200 metres. A second reel, again fully hydraulic, offers 100 metres of 12.5 mm (half-inch) jetting hose for smaller jetting or clean-up work. For winter protection it is fitted with an antifreeze protection system.
Whale has designed the tanker to be very operator friendly. Plenty of room is provided for storage of hoses, road signs, nozzles and personal protective equipment. Controls for both pumps are mounted at the rear for ease of use and operator safety.
The equipment is mounted on a Scania P 340 8x4 chassis with a CP14 day cab. The truck also has inter-axle locks and traction control, which enable it to cope easily with often-slippery site conditions.
