Transport specialist Parker Distribution is delivering ultrasound machines to Harley Street clinics with a PowerMate powered stairclimber from Stanley Handling.
Northamptonshire-based Parker Distribution has won a contract with GE Healthcare to deliver portable ultrasound machines to medical practices throughout the country. The company's early experiences in London's famous Harley Street led to it acquiring a PowerMate LE1 powered stairclimber from safety handling specialists Stanley Handling.
The state-of-the art ultrasound machines resemble a large office photocopier with a VDU mounted on the top. Weighing up to a hefty 250kgs, the units are considerably awkward to handle, particularly where space and access is limited.
Nowhere did this become more apparent than when delivering in Harley Street. Many of the clinics and practices are in converted Georgian townhouses which feature a combination of entrance steps from street level, winding stairs over as many as four floors and narrow landings, presenting Parker Distribution with a formidable handling challenge.
PowerMate LE1 enables the delivery team to load and unload the ultrasound units and 'walk' them with minimal effort up and down steps and staircases that are often steep and narrow. The addition of a special landing extender allows the team to negotiate the tightest of landings and corridors and deliver the high-value machines safely, quickly and in perfect condition to a demanding clientele.
With further staff being trained by Stanley Handling with a view to securing further contracts of this type, director Gary Parker observes: "PowerMate really has made a difference to how we do this job. It would be a nightmare without it – it really does 'do what it says on the can!'"
