Temporary Building Wins A Second Lease Of Life

A company that supplies temporary buildings has just completed its latest project – taking down and moving a redundant structure 30 miles to a new home.

It is the second time that Steve Alldread, managing director of Ripley-based Transformaspace, has been involved with this particular building.

Steve set up his own company after being made redundant by a firm which makes temporary buildings. While working for his former employer he supplied one to budget airline Ryanair at East Midlands Airport.

Ryanair used it as a training centre for more than two years, housing a flight simulator and a replica of a plane fuselage to put cabin staff through their paces.

But when Ryanair no longer had use for it Steve bought it back and sold it to manufacturer AF Switchgear of Sutton-in-Ashfield, in a £100,000 deal. The building just fitted in with their requirements.

It took Steve and a team of four workers four days to dismantle the steel-reinforced hard upvc-walled building which included flooring, lighting, heating, fire and security alarms.

Nelson Distribution of Belper transported the materials from the airport at Castle Donington to AF Switchgear's premises at Nunn Brook Road, where Steve and his colleagues spent five days re-assembling it, complete with facilities.

The building, measuring 20 metres by 15 metres and six metres high, will be used for storage, freeing up other space for manufacturing. Already, a mezzanine floor has been installed to provide extra storage space.

Steve said: "This is a great example of how a temporary building can be used flexibly, easily relocated to another site to a high standard, and be a cost-effective solution to meet the needs for extra space.

"Ryanair were able to dispose of an unwanted building which matched AF Switchgear's needs. It was a win, win situation."

Mike Ratcliffe, operations manager of AF Switchgear, said: "We are extremely satisfied with the service that we have received from Transformaspace.

"We identified a need and within weeks Steve came up with a very cost-effective solution for our immediate problem of optimising storage space."
