Acknowledged as one of the worlds leading specialist provider of lubrication solutions, Castrol embarked on a project to modernise their storage facility at their laboratories in Pangbourne, near Reading in England. Little did they know that in under four months they would have an up to date mobile shelving system.
The laboratory storage was located in a room and used conventional shelving with much of the available space taken up by aisles. In order to increase the total available storage area and make the samples more accessible it was necessary for a change. Castrol enlisted the support of leading UK storage and material handling equipment solutions provider, SSI Schaefer.
As a new client for Schaefer it was important to create an installation that met the requirements of the laboratory technicians who were using the storage facility throughout the day, and at the same time provide a facility that would allow Castrol the room to expand to meet the diverse needs of customers right around the world.
After approval from Castrol, Ian Cook, Project Manager at SSI Schaefer, designed an installation using the very latest technology within shelving – 'Powered Mobile Shelving R3000' – a very first for Schaefer.
Castrol has gained a number of significant benefits since the completion of the project, a spokesperson for Castrol explains:
"SSI Schaefer has provided us with powered mobile shelving which has in turn made our working life run much more smoothly. We have gained so much more flexible space, which allows us to organise our samples more efficiently. The old standard shelving is a thing of the past. We are delighted with the new and improved research facility."
Ian Cook says:
"This is the first installation that Schaefer has completed using the Powered Mobile Shelving and it has been a huge success for Castrol. The shelving was installed without problems ensuring that heavier items were placed on the lower shelves and the lighter items nearer the top."
