The introduction to the French market was made through UK pallet distribution network Pall-ex, which has recently launched a new pallet distribution network in France.
The order, initially for two Cartwright step frame double deck trailers, followed a visit to the Cartwright manufacturing complex in March by a Pall-Ex representative and French operators considering joining the new Pall-ex network.
The order is for two 4.6 metre overall height trailers This is unusual in that the general 4m overall ceiling due to bridge heights in France and across Europe would normally preclude this application. However, specific routes for the Cartwright trailers will ensure all bridges are avoided, allowing for the extra height of these new efficient Cartwright double deck trailers.
The trailers bound for France go into build towards the end of the year and delivery will involve collection by the customer in Calais in early January.
The end user is a founding member of Pall-ex France called Centre Express Limousin (CEL). Managing Director, Gérard Hugon, is among the first of 40 French transport operators who joined the new Pall-Ex distribution network in May.
"The operation of a pallet network is one of the most fuel and road usage efficient forms of road freight transportation. It works on the principal that the nearest member collects and delivers the freight, therefore the number of miles travelled is dramatically reduced. Adding double deck trailers, extends the possibility to further reduce the number of trailers required whilst at the same time increasing the payload capacity; making the model even more efficient" said Anand Assi, project director of Pall-Ex in charge of Pall-Ex European expansion.
The Cartwright double decks have a fixed second deck together with wrap around rear curtains and solid rear closures enabling loading from the side only. The 'GS Cheetah' swept aero dynamic roof at the front of the trailer ensures the operator achieves the most efficient fuel returns.
The main deck floor is low height with a steel grille construction in the middle to prevent pallets from moving side to side during loading or transit.
Andy Jarvis, Technical Sales Manager for Cartwright commented: "This is a very significant order for Cartwright as it is a breakthrough for our products into the French market. Alan Parker, who is a well-known transport consultant, brought the two companies together to create this unique opportunity for European operators.
"There is real potential for additional sales with other French operators in the new Pall-ex distribution network once they see the benefits being achieved by CEL, as well as other countries operators through their international desk which covers networks in not only France but Spain, Italy, Turkey and Germany."
