Troax's fire-rated, double skin steel partitioning system, Excalibur, has been used to create a series of laboratories, workshops, offices and storage areas for the Thermo Electron Corporation during a refurbishment of its facility in Bishops Stortford, Herts.
A combination of Excalibur modular, full steel and double glazed partitioning panels were used to construct the new facilities for the company, a global leader in products and services for Life Science, Bioprocessing and Drug Discovery with subsidiaries throughout Europe, North America and the Far East.
The area, which also includes a lobby and goods in and out departments, is located partly beneath a mezzanine floor within the building, with the perimeter constructed entirely from fire-rated panels in order to ensure a safe working environment in the potentially hazardous laboratory areas.
Dexion Anglia designed the layout and the installation, adapting the Excalibur system to the right height to fit the space available beneath the mezzanine floor, up to four metres in certain places, and fitting fire-rated single and double doors, including special height double door in the workshop area.
Fire-rated Excalibur panels are specifically designed to meet the fire resistance integrity criteria specified in BS:476, Part 22: 1987 for a period of 60 minutes and are of monobloc construction comprising two steel skins separated by an inert mineral wool insulating infill. This also provides excellent sound and heat insulation and complies with all relevant Health and Safety legislation.
Excalibur's double skin design also offers another important aesthetic advantage in this type of busy, commercial environment – because it is flush both sides and has a high quality, powder coated finish it creates a smart and attractive appearance and is extremely durable.
