A new push towards autonomous mining has been unveiled after MMD Group signed a deal to integrate driverless technology into its material handling systems.
The Isle of Man-based firm has entered into a Memorandum of Agreement with CiDi Inc. to bring advanced autonomous driving capability into its TraxIQ platform.
Under the agreement, MMD will lead global commercialisation of the system, while CiDi will supply the hardware and software needed to enable autonomy, including sensing and computing systems.
The deal also includes retrofit kits designed to convert existing mining equipment into autonomous machines, potentially widening adoption across operations.
The partnership signals a shift away from traditional equipment-led models towards a more integrated approach to material movement in mining.
TraxIQ combines modular equipment, energy strategies and autonomous control systems to create what the companies describe as a more flexible and scalable solution.
Initial work will focus on validating the technology in mining environments around the world, building on previous deployments in China.
MMD Group managing director Martin Vorster said the agreement brings together complementary strengths. “TraxIQ represents a new approach to material movement,” he said.
“By combining MMD’s materials handling expertise with CiDi’s advanced autonomy technology, we are enabling the deployment of autonomous handling systems that improve operational efficiency, reduce energy consumption, and support the transition to more scalable and efficient operations.”
CiDi co-founder Dr Ma Wei said the partnership would support the development of more intelligent systems. “We are delighted to announce this agreement,” he said.
“Together we are developing an intelligent system that integrates autonomy with the physical flow of material through the mine.”
He added that the deal sets out a framework for long-term collaboration as the platform moves towards wider deployment across global mining markets.
MMD, headquartered in the Isle of Man, is known for its material sizing and handling systems, while CiDi specialises in autonomous driving technology for commercial and industrial vehicles.
