Minister of State for Energy, Charles Hendry MP has re-affirmed the role of the waste management industry in achieving the Government's 2020 targets.
Delivering the opening speech at RWM in partnership with CIWM exhibition, the minister said that the waste management industry has an integral part to play in helping deliver the Government's energy and environmental policies.
As well as outlining current policy initiatives, Mr Hendry commented that it was the role of Government to push industry to achieve higher levels of landfill diversion and energy recovery. He added that the administration is looking to work in partnership with the waste management industry to reduce the amount of material going to landfill.
The UK's largest waste management event, which opens today, takes place at Birmingham's NEC and runs until Thursday 15 September.
Commenting on the news, event director Gerry Sherwood said: "The minister's comments are proof that waste, recycling and sustainability have mainstream support throughout government."
RWM in partnership with CIWM is the UK's biggest event for organisations with an interest in waste and recycling. Formed late last year from the merger of the successful Recycling and Waste Management Exhibition (RWM) and Futuresource shows, it will feature more than 650 exhibitors plus a three-day seminar programme with over 90 speakers - the largest collection of free content in the industry. Designed to inform, improve and inspire organisations it covers all areas of waste and recycling, from plant, vehicles and equipment to practical advice on how effective waste management can help to cut costs and turn waste into a valuable resource.
