Logistics UK has welcomed the Government’s new Industrial Strategy as a clear sign that the logistics sector is finally being recognised as the engine room of the British economy — though it warns there’s more work to do.

The body has responded to the publication of the new strategy, highlighting the vital role the logistics sector plays in driving UK growth and productivity.

Kevin Green, Policy Director at Logistics UK, welcomed the strategy’s recognition of the industry’s importance, while expressing disappointment that logistics was not formally designated as a “foundational” sector.

“Today’s Industrial Strategy recognises the critical importance of the logistics sector in helping to deliver the government’s growth plans,” said Green.

“Logistics is integral to all parts of the economy – indeed, nothing moves without it, and our members supply our hospitals, schools, factories, shops and homes with everything they need, everywhere, every day.”

While the foundational status was not conferred on the sector, Green acknowledged the positive step of identifying an efficient logistics system as key to enhancing UK productivity.

“We will continue to engage closely with the government to drive the economy forwards,” he said, “including on its new plan for freight and logistics and by pressing for inclusion in the work of the new Supply Chain Centre, the new grid Connections Accelerator Service and Growth and Skills Levy reforms.”

The business group reaffirmed its commitment to working alongside policymakers to ensure logistics remains central to national economic plans.
