The UK logistics sector is an “unstoppable force for economic growth” and lies “at the heart of government’s plan for change”, according to Lilian Greenwood, Minister for the Future of Roads.

Addressing over 250 industry leaders at Logistics UK’s inaugural annual conference in London today (4 June), Ms Greenwood highlighted the sector’s pivotal role in delivering national growth and pledged stronger collaboration with industry stakeholders.

Held at the QEII Conference Centre, the event also marked the launch of The Logistics Report 2025 — the business group’s flagship annual review.

The report reveals that logistics contributes £170 billion to the UK economy and supports more than 8% of the national workforce, reinforcing its role as a cornerstone of economic productivity.

In her keynote speech, Ms Greenwood acknowledged growing calls for clearer direction from government: “The industry wants more clarity from government.

"Logistics lies at the heart of government’s plan for change. We are ready to work with the sector every step of the way.”

Logistics UK President Phil Roe opened the conference by underscoring the sector’s critical value: “Logistics is not a background operation.

"It is a driver of growth and a barometer of economic efficiency. When logistics thrives, the economy thrives.

"The Minister’s address today shows government is keen to work with the sector, but there still needs to be a step change in how logistics is understood, supported and prioritised in national policy making.”

Highlighting urgent challenges around decarbonisation and skills, Ms Greenwood reaffirmed the government’s support for the Generation Logistics campaign, designed to boost awareness and recruitment across the industry.

Closing her remarks, she thanked the sector for “keeping the wheels turning, driving economic growth and improving lives,” assuring attendees that “we are listening.”

The Logistics Report 2025 brings together government data, expert insight and the results of Logistics UK’s annual survey of over 500 members.

It offers a snapshot of the sector’s health, outlook and pressing concerns.
