Chalcroft selected to develop second phase at Business Centre

Chalcroft Construction has been selected to construct the next phase in a development that has helped to regenerate an area of Norwich.

The Kings Lynn-based company was selected over four other firms to build nine single-storey workshops at the £2.5m Henderson Business Centre, just off the A140 Norwich ring road, on the old Bowthorpe School site.

Phase 1, the business centre itself, was constructed by Chalcroft and opened in July 2006. Since then, it has become a great success story and is now home to a number of businesses, including a social enterprise, a company specialising in customising cars and a printing firm.

The workshops, which will take 23 weeks to complete, have been designed by Norwich architects Feilden and Mawson. The quantity surveyors are Davis Langdon, of Thorpe Road Norwich, while engineering design has been provided by Waldeck Associates.

Andrew Hardy, contracts manager at Chalcroft Construction, commented: "It was great to be involved with the first phase and we have watched the centre grow to become a great success, both helping local businesses to get off the ground and attracting new businesses to Norwich.

"The second phase will see us working closely with all the partners involved in constructing nine industrial units that will help to continue the excellent work being done in the community."

The Henderson Business Centre is owned by the North Earlham, Larkman and Marlpit Development Trust (NELM) and managed by Norfolk and Waveney Enterprise Services. The centre has received generous funding from the East of England Development Agency and New Deal for Communities.

Nick Craig, chief executive of NELM, commented: "Chalcroft was selected because its proposal was the most competitive and the timescales were right. We were extremely satisfied with the Phase 1 project and we look forward to working in close partnership with Chalcroft once again."
