BMT Isis Ltd, a subsidiary of BMT Ltd, has provided safety support and advice to the (PD Ports) Teesport Harbour Master in order to aid the planned commencement of Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) import operations through Teesport.
BMT Isis was selected for this work based on its marine navigational safety assessment and auditing capability. The company is also equipped with specialist knowledge of safety management systems, and of the navigational safety management system operated by PD Teesport in particular.
Located in the port of Teesport near Middlesbrough, the Teesside GasPort is the first-ever dockside LNG regasification facility and the second operational LNG importation facility in the UK.
Built to accommodate the proprietary technology of Excelerate Energy's specialized Energy Bridge vessel fleet, the GasPort required less land-based infrastructure than conventional onshore terminals. As a result, the project took less than a year to design, permit and construct at one-tenth the cost of a traditional onshore terminal.
With service commencing in February 2007, the Teesside GasPort will allow Excelerate Energy to deliver at peak rates of up to 600 million cubic feet of natural gas per day into the UK market. It is capable of initially importing up to four LNG cargoes per month, each of which contains the equivalent of approximately three billion cubic feet of natural gas.
The inauguration of the facility took place at Teesport on Tuesday 20th February, organised by Excelerate Energy, which operates the specialised Energy Bridge vessel fleet.
BMT Isis has subsequently undertaken work for Orkney Islands Council, which required a risk assessment on the ship-to-ship transfer of LNG that is associated with the same LNG import operation.
BMT has undertaken substantial work for maritime authorities and operators in the past which includes search and rescue capability assessment and management, vessel safety, environmental assessments and impact, waste management studies, and risk-based safety & security management consultancy services.
