ABB Robotics has launched a new vision system that gives its robots the ability to see and adapt to their surroundings in real time, using any third-party camera or sensor.
The technology, called OmniCore™ EyeMotion, enables OmniCore-powered robots to interpret their environment with advanced perception skills, opening up new possibilities for automation in industries ranging from automotive and electronics to logistics, packaging and food and drink.
Marc Segura, President of ABB Robotics, said: “Over the past decade, we have evolved AI vision to give robots ‘eyes’ that can see the world in 3D, but previously this required advanced camera hardware.
"In one step, OmniCore EyeMotion grants any robot the ability to both see and understand the world around it, for a wide range of 2D and 3D vision-based applications, advancing autonomy and versatility.”
Designed with accessibility in mind, EyeMotion uses a simple web interface that allows cameras or sensors to be added via drag and drop.
It is fully integrated with ABB’s software suite, including RobotStudio®, the widely used programming and simulation tool, and reduces commissioning times by up to 90% compared with bespoke solutions.
The system supports rapid image acquisition and recognition, enabling deployment in a matter of hours rather than days.
According to ABB, this significantly lowers barriers for businesses looking to integrate advanced robotic vision into their operations.
OmniCore EyeMotion is expected to transform a wide variety of robotic tasks, from sorting items and quality inspection to complex applications where speed and precision are critical.
When combined with ABB’s Automatic Path Planning Online system, EyeMotion can help robots autonomously generate collision-free paths around obstacles and moving objects in real time. This can reduce cycle times by up to 50% and further boost automation efficiency.
ABB describes EyeMotion as another milestone on its journey towards Autonomous Versatile Robotics (AVR™), a vision for next-generation robots that can plan and perform complex tasks independently.
By combining vision, precision, dexterity and generative AI, ABB aims to create systems capable of adapting to dynamic environments without human intervention.
OmniCore EyeMotion will be showcased at the 25th China International Industry Fair (CIIF) in Shanghai, from 23 to 27 September 2025.
