On hearing that a motion to consider ‘scrapping’ the proposed National Postcode – Eircode - has been passed, FTA Ireland has welcomed the decision saying it was symbolic and one that would make sense.
FTA Ireland has previously voiced its concerns on many occasions outlining complaints from its members who had said that the Eircode system appeared to optimise the delivery of postal mail, but was not adequate for location or navigation purposes.
The motion, which was passed this week, had been proposed by Councillor Alan Tobin who had called upon Meath County Councillors to pass a motion recommending the scrapping of the proposed system.
Neil McDonnell – FTA Ireland General Manager:
“FTA Ireland consider that this is symbolic. The introduction of the National Postcode - Eircode - is of course a matter for Minister Alex White and the Department of Communications, Energy and Natural Resources. However, the Meath County Councillors are clearly voicing the frustrations which have previously been reported to FTAI by our members.”
As the proposed system is to be Ireland’s national postcode, FTAI had previously asked for reassurance to all users that Eircode would be fit for purpose.
Mr McDonnell added:
“While Eircode will facilitate Government agencies and utilities in sending bills to consumers and businesses, it will provide no tangible benefits or cost reductions in return. We echo the call from Meath County Council to Minister Whyte to reconsider Eircode, and say to him that it’s never too late to do the right thing.”
Councillor Alan Tobin had called upon Meath County Councillors to consider scrapping Eircode, and thanked his fellow Councillors for their foresight and decisiveness in identifying that the system is far from being the best option as a postcode for a modern and growing Irish economy.
