1) Valpak is the UK's largest Producer Responsibility Scheme, meeting the obligations of 4,000 UK businesses under the Packaging Waste Regulations. Under these regulations, businesses are required to invest in recycling through tradable certificates known as Packaging Waste Recovery Notes (PRNs). Revenue from PRNs is reinvested in the UK's recycling and recovery industry. This system of recycling investment is one of the most cost-effective in Europe.
2) The Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment Directive (WEEE) is a Producer Responsibility directive aimed at reducing the waste from electrical equipment, increasing recovery and recycling rates of WEEE and improving environmental performance of all operators involved in the life cycle of electrical and electronic equipment. It is estimated that up to 100,000 businesses (25,000 Producers and 75,000 Retailers) will be affected by the legislation.
