SB Munchers from NOV Mono improves efficiency for United Utilities

A revolutionary EZstripTM maintain in place (MIP) pump and two high performance SB Munchers from NOV Mono have been specified by United Utilities to improve efficiency and reduce downtime at its Pumping Station in Kirkbride, North Cumbria.

The site, which was experiencing problems with its existing centrifugal pumps continuously blocking, causing significant downtime for the station, turned to

the leading pump manufacturer to provide a bespoke solution.

Chris Cooke, Area Maintenance engineer at Kirkbride Pumping Station, commented: "Highly frustrated with our existing centrifugal pumps, we turned to NOV Mono, who we knew to be very reliable in raw sewage applications, to provide us with the answer we were looking for.

"Installed on a duty assist operation at a capacity of 39m3/h, we specified NOV Mono's new EZstripTM cavity PC pump, which can be fully stripped down and maintained in just 30 minutes, along with two of its high torque low speed SB Munchers.

"Since its installation, the NOV Mono equipment has been operating smoothly and we couldn't be happier. With the complete strip down of the EZstripTM system so quick and easy, downtime at the site has been significantly reduced."

NOV Mono's EZstripTM progressing cavity pump is the biggest leap forward in progressing cavity (PC) pump design for 30 years and has been specifically designed to provide a quick and easy way to disassemble, de-rag and maintain a PC pump in-situ, eliminating the costly maintenance and down time that servicing can often cause.

The EZstripTM pump can be installed into new plants or retrofitted into existing NOV Mono Compact C installations. No electrical disconnection is required and suction and discharge pipes remain untouched. The EZstripTM pump offers dry run protection and all operational parameters are unaffected. The model range has a capacity of up to 165m3/h and 12 bar pressure, and is available in either cast iron or stainless steel. On new installations NOV Mono pumps only require a small bore diameter rising main from 32mm upwards depending on flow, this has a dramatic effect on reducing the cost of the overall installation.

The SB Muncher® is a twin shaft, low speed high torque grinder. Each shaft is fitted with a series of interleaving cutters that allow liquid to pass through, trapping and macerating solids with their high torque cutting action. Low operating and cutter tip speeds dramatically reduce mechanical wear, and also offers greatly reduced noise levels when compared to high speed macerators.

Pump capacity can be set to generate a consistent and improved sewage flow that helps improved effluent B.O.D. (Biological Oxygen Demand) handling at small rural wastewater treatment plants. The efficient maceration of the sewage also eliminates the need to screen at inlet level, with no associated labour costs for disposal of screenings.
