MORGAN Tucker, the Newark-based firm of consulting engineers, has been appointed to deliver one of the largest rail connected logistics centres in Europe ready for the 2012 Olympics.
The firm has been appointed by English Welsh and Scottish Railways (EWS) in conjunction with the ODA to deliver rail services to the Olympic Park in East London.
The 28-acre site is based at the south of the proposed Olympic Stadium and will be used to deliver construction materials to the Olympic Park by rail.
The scale of the project is immense with over 9000 tonnes of materials a day arriving at the site by rail when the logistics centre becomes fully operational. In addition to the rail connected facilities at the centre, the site will also accommodate a number of concrete plants, other manufacturing facilities and a waste management centre.
Morgan Tucker has been appointed to provide a full design, procurement and project management role on the site which in essence means that Morgan Tucker is responsible for the delivery of the prestigious £4.5 million infrastructure project. The client has also appointed Morgan Tucker to undertake procurement and supervision of the main principal contractor.
Before the Olympics gets underway, part of the 28-acre logistics site will be transformed into the warm up track for athletes. Morgan Tucker will be responsible for ensuring their site is capable of being turned in to the training facility.
Matthew Tucker, MD of Morgan Tucker said: "This is a hugely prestigious project for Morgan Tucker and proof that the Midlands is already benefiting from the 2012 Olympics.
"The client was looking for a smaller, specialist organisation to deliver this project. We are doing really unusual things on the site, not only ensuring the site can be connected to the rail network, but also providing raised platforms to enable 80 tonne vehicles to load and unload materials from a train."
Morgan Tucker intends to further extend the Olympic work in the Midlands – as it continues to work with other organisations in the area that can give specialist advice.
EWS General Manager (Olympics) David Legge said: "We have been working with Morgan Tucker for some time now on other schemes. On a project of this scale and prestige we needed a civil engineering firm whom we knew we could trust to react quickly on a complex project whilst looking after our commercial interests - we are confident that Morgan Tucker will fit that bill."
The project will run for the next six months with an anticipated completion date on site of July 2008.
