Hoogvliet-based international heavy transport and access company Peinemann specializes in the rental and sale of powered access equipment to the shipyard and petrochemical industry. The company recently purchased a Genie® SX-180 boom lift manufactured by Terex Aerial Work Platforms (AWP) to support lifting, drilling and subsea solutions provider Huisman at its Rotterdam shipyards. In addition to its towering 56.85 m (186 ft) working height and 24.4 m (80 ft) outreach, there are several other reasons why the machine has risen to its owner’s and operator’s high demands.
A wider choice of standard features adapted to shipyards
Petrochemical and shipyard applications involve performing specialized tasks at extreme heights in tough conditions. For Peinemann this implies that, in addition to complying with strict safety imperatives, there are fittings that its machines cannot be without.
“In our line of business, a 7.5 kW on-board generator, an AC power-to-platform and a welder-ready package are imperative,” says Andrew Pauw, Access General Manager, Peinemann. “When we enquired about the genie SX-180 boom lift, we were pleasantly surprised to find that the equipment we needed came as part of the machine’s standard configuration. On similar machines by other brands these are generally provided as options at extra cost.”
The Trackunit™ Track and Trace Fleet Management Module is another of the machine’s unique features that also comes as standard. Linked to the unit’s Genie telematics-ready connector, this system offers the benefits of a wide range of functions, among which hour-meter reporting, location, machine utilization, and security abilities such as geo-fencing, alarms by movement and remote machinery disabling.
Innovative safety and protective options
To comply with the strict safety specifications of the shipyard sector, this particular genie SX-180 unit was specially equipped with an Overhead Protective Alarm (OPA) - an optional operator safety system that, in the case of contact with an overhead obstacle, automatically interrupts boom functions and activates an audible alarm and flashing light to alert bystanders of a potential problem.
To protect the machine’s bodywork from damage caused by paint, oil, diesel, cement, chemicals, and salt corrosion, Peinemann also ordered its genie SX-180 unit with the Genie® NanoClear+™ paint coating - an innovative new option whose repellent properties also make cleaning equipment fast and easy, helping to reduce labour costs.
Extremely stable - highly manoeuvrable
Since the machine’s delivery, it has operated inside the workshop of the Huisman facility for the maintenance of its 57 m (186 ft) overhead port cranes. To perform their high-precision duties, technicians rely on equipment that offers the stability and flexibility they need to work efficiently and comfortably.
“For the moment, we have a lot of work lined-up in our workshop,” says Mr Wil van Boxtel, Site Manager, Huisman. “It’s a very busy place with forklifts darting about carrying materials between high stacks of sea containers waiting to be repaired. Thanks to its 2.59 m (8.5 ft) chassis width, the genie SX-180 lift is relatively narrow for a machine in this category and manoeuvres extremely well. Outside in the yard, we soon count on using our new machine for vessel painting and cleaning, and pipe lay testing applications."
Features that make the difference for operators
For the company’s maintenance technicians, feeling confident and being able to move the machine easily and rapidly are key factors. “The genie SX-180 lift is a very robust machine and provides an incredibly stable surface to work from,” says Mr van Boxtel. “Our technicians also say that its full height drive function is an absolute must! Since they no longer need to descend and raise the boom at each time they switch positions, this system saves them a lot of time.”
