DSV Apprentice Scheme wins prestigious award

DSV Road Limited in Immingham has scooped this year's Most Innovative Employer prize at the Grimsby Institute Group's apprentice awards for the development of its highly successful apprentice programme.

The Grimsby Institute, the east coast's largest provider of further and higher education, presented the logistics company with the award in recognition of the implementation of its apprentice scheme at its Immingham facility in 2011.

In total, ten apprentices joined the scheme in Immingham, with seven assigned to work on the transport side of the company at DSV Road Limited, while three joined DSV Commercials Limited, which provides a commercial vehicle and trailer maintenance and a repair workshop.

Chris Marshall, Director, DSV Commercials, who received the award on behalf of the company, says: "The award was a complete surprise. We are honoured that such an important local institution has recognised the success of our apprentice scheme.

"So far the quality of candidate has been exceptional and all have fitted in very well to our environment and various business areas."

The scheme was organised with the help of Apprenticeship Agency Scheme (ATA), a brand new initiative designed to help the logistics sector overcome the challenges of taking on apprentices.

It offers school leavers, who are facing a tough job market, the opportunity to complete a qualification while gaining experience working in the logistics industry.

The DSV scheme hopefully ends with the offer of a job if positions are available. If not, the apprentices leave with an NVQ that will help them gain a job at another company, giving them an invaluable start to their careers.

Although the award recognised the implementation of the scheme at DSV's Immingham facility, it has also been rolled out at DSV's other facilities across the UK.

If you would like to find out more about DSV Road Limited's apprentice scheme and are attending the Multimodal Exhibition, at the NEC, Birmingham, DSV Road Limited, Director of Sales and Marketing, Chris Malyon, will be taking part in a panel discussion on staff training at 2.40pm on 2nd May.
