A new automated fulfilment centre in Savannah, Georgia is set to dramatically increase processing speeds and storage capacity for global logistics provider Komar Distribution Services (KDS), following a major robotics deployment with warehouse automation specialist Exotec.
The 760,000 sq ft facility on the US East Coast will be equipped with Exotec’s Skypod robotic system as part of a fully integrated automation solution designed to support rapid growth in direct-to-consumer (D2C) fulfilment.
The site will handle rising volumes across apparel, home goods and consumer products brands. This includes Komar-owned labels such as Cuddl Duds and Le Mystère, alongside a growing roster of third-party logistics (3PL) clients.
Once operational, the automation is expected to increase throughput by up to 50% while boosting storage density by 30%. The system will also support both each- and case-picking within a single solution, allowing the facility to process orders more efficiently while reducing reliance on difficult-to-fill warehouse roles.
KDS said the investment comes as the company prepares for continued growth in parcel volumes, with some customers already shipping more than 100,000 parcels each month.
“Our customers are growing fast and expect us to grow with them,” said Tyler Harris, president at KDS. “We needed a scalable solution built for speed, density, and adaptability.”
He added that the technology would allow the company to “process orders in minutes, maximise our footprint, and operate efficiently even in an unpredictable environment”.
The decision to automate also reflects wider pressures facing fulfilment providers, including labour shortages, shifting tariff conditions and rising expectations for rapid delivery from consumers.
Unlike traditional warehouse automation systems that often require long implementation periods and fixed infrastructure, Exotec’s modular Skypod platform allows capacity to be expanded gradually as demand increases.
The deployment includes Skypod robots, Skypath conveyor systems, carton sealing equipment, inbound and outbound scanning, and Exotec’s Deepsky warehouse execution software, which manages operations in real time.
Arthur Bellamy, chief revenue officer at Exotec, said many logistics operators are under pressure to match the rapid fulfilment speeds set by major e-commerce platforms.
“KDS’ customers are contending with challenges that many growing, successful businesses face, meeting Amazon-level customer expectations for speed while effectively managing costs,” he said.
“Our modular solution is the most reactive design on the market, enabling customers to prep orders in two minutes or less.”
The Savannah facility is expected to reach full automation by early 2027 and is currently onboarding new client programmes.
