In the last year ASDA has taken a number of steps to reduce its impact on the environment. As part of this strategy, ASDA has implemented a new recycling scheme for plastic at its regional distribution centre in Didcot, Oxfordshire.
With the help of leading waste solutions provider Mil-tek, the distribution centre now recycles all of its plastic instead of sending it to landfill. The centre has recently installed a Mil-tek baler, which compacts and bales the shrink wrap and soft plastic, which is used for wrapping pallets, into manageable bales. The bales are then collected by Best Way Recycling, where the waste plastic is melted down and re-made into lower grade plastic products, such as bin liners and damp proof course.
ASDA will now diverting around 115 tonnes from landfill a year. Simon Fern, Environment Manager for ASDA said: "We are aiming to reduce food product packaging by 25% in our stores, so reducing and recycling packaging behind the scenes at our distribution centre in Didcot goes hand in hand with this. By working with Mil-tek we are becoming closer to our goal of sending zero waste to landfill by 2010."
