Toyota marks 70 years of counterbalance forklift production

Today’s Toyota forklift range includes electric, lithium-ion, diesel and LPG power options

Toyota Material Handling is celebrating 70 years since the launch of its first counterbalance forklift, marking a major milestone in the development of its materials-handling range.

The company introduced the LA model in 1956 to meet growing demand from industrial and warehouse operators.

Since then, its counterbalance trucks have developed from internal-combustion machines into electric, automated and connected vehicles used across a wide range of UK industries.

Toyota said the anniversary reflected seven decades of investment in engineering, efficiency and continuous improvement.

Its forklifts have been developed using principles from the Toyota Production System, with a focus on reducing waste and improving productivity.

The company said its approach had helped it become one of the world’s leading materials-handling brands.

Over the past 70 years, Toyota has expanded the range of power options available to customers.

Its current counterbalance fleet includes electric, lithium-ion, diesel and LPG models, allowing operators to select machinery suited to their working environment and operational requirements.

One of the most significant developments came in 2002 with the introduction of the System of Active Stability.

Toyota described it as the first system designed to help reduce the risk of tip-overs and improve operator confidence.

The company said the technology continued to play an important role in forklift safety.

Toyota has also increased its focus on electric-powered handling equipment as businesses seek to reduce emissions and energy consumption.

Its electric counterbalance trucks are designed to provide an alternative to conventional fuel-powered machines while maintaining the performance needed for industrial operations.
