London Remade invited a select group of waste and recycling experts to discuss the future of sustainability led by Jonathon Porritt, Chair, UK Sustainable Development Commission. Porritt described his ideals and discussed his latest book, Capitalism as if the world matters.
Jonathon Porritt said "We're faced with the most pressing problem of our time – how capitalism and business can provide a future of wealth, equity and ecological integrity. I've attempted to define capitalism and the possibilities to deliver sustainable capitalism for a world of nine billion people."
Together with the implications of the Stern Review: the economics of climate change, the experts debated the sustainability challenge and how the waste and recycling industry needs to respond.
Daniel Silverstone, Chief Executive London Remade commented: "We are beginning to realise the immensity of the challenge to achieve sustainable waste management. While the sheer scale of the task will trigger innovation, we will need a regulatory environment fit for purpose to achieve the CO2 challenge in the ways we manage our waste resources in the future."
The discussion focused on how consumer trends and production processes could be harnessed to achieve sustainable options.
London Remade is working with over 500 organisations in the capital, helping them to green their purchasing habits, procure sustainable products and reduce the impact of their operations. Through delivering the Mayor's Green Procurement Code, London Remade has facilitated a £379 million spend on sustainable products and diverted 900,000 tonnes of waste from landfill. Last year, organisations signed up to the Mayor's Code saved 175,000 tonnes of CO2 emissions from being released through the purchase of recycled products1.
Porritt continued: "The results achieved by the Mayor's Green Procurement Code demonstrate how public bodies and businesses are beginning to engage with sustainability and how quickly the market for recycled content products is expanding."
