SCX Special Projects expands Automation and Controls

Sheffield-based SCX Special Projects is very proud to announce the

appointment of two industry specialists within its Automation and

Controls function.

Nigel Montgomery is appointed as Controls Director, whilst Paul Bettison

joins as Controls Manager.

The two new appointments will bolster SCX Special Projects' Electrical

Controls Department, which undertakes the Automation and Controls

aspects of its bespoke mechanical handling solutions.

Nigel and Paul have already worked on a large number of SCX Special

Projects' solutions as they both previously worked together at one of

SCX's control systems partner companies.

Between them they have more than 60 years' experience in the industry.

Nigel began his career as a Process Control Engineer for British Steel

at the Templeborough Steelworks (now the Magna Science Adventure

Centre), and Paul's control system design experience started in the

offshore industry on oil and gas pipeline safety systems. They both

furthered their careers in the sales, design and project delivery of

many high profile automated moving structures such as Tower Bridge, the

Falkirk Wheel, Newcastle Millennium Bridge and in collaboration with

SCX, the London Eye and Wimbledon Centre Court roof.

The appointments by SCX Special Projects follow a series of expansion

and new business wins for the Group across the last two years.

SCX Special Projects is experiencing increased demand for its automation

and control solutions because more clients realise that it can deliver

significant efficiencies to their business. Appointing new highly

experienced, dedicated control engineers to bolster the current team

will allow the company to meet the vast majority of the increase in

demand in-house.

Automatic cranes from SCX Special Projects' significantly improve the

efficiency of production and material handling operations. The company's

in-house developed bespoke systems are capable of handling delicate and

obscure loads, completing complicated manoeuvres or reaching seemingly

inaccessible storage locations.

The Oman Aluminium Mill is the latest client to benefit from one of SCX

Special Projects' Automated Solutions, which are becoming increasingly

popular with clients. As the company drives forward, this bespoke

automation capability offers a valuable opportunity for SCX Special

Projects to stand out even further from the competition.

Automation is useful not only to the manufacturing industry, but is what

drives moving structure solutions, such as SCX's retractable roof at

Wimbledon. It also offers clients in specialist industries, such as

Nuclear, huge safety advantages, not least because of the associated

remote operation capabilities.

Automated handling systems also eliminate load damage through vastly

improved positional accuracy and minimise injury from human error or

fatigue on handling applications within almost any industry.

Previously, SCX partner companies have provided the controls systems for

a proportion of SCX Special Projects' solutions, but Managing Director

Simon Eastwood has taken the decision to invest in offering a dedicated

and expanded in-house service and explains: "Automation and control is

increasingly becoming more valuable to us as more and more clients

realise the benefits it offers their businesses."

He added: "We need to be able to keep up with this increase in demand

in-house if we are going to continue to provide high levels of

satisfaction for our customers."

The Special Projects' Controls Department works closely with SCX Company

Burnand XH, which is a distributor of the electrical control equipment

that is used on the Group's handling solutions.

SCX Special Projects is also looking for additional Control System

Design Engineers to bolster the department even further. Some interviews

have already taken place, but if you're interested in working for a

company that continues to expand, email your CV and covering letter to
