The New Earth Solutions Recycling Facilities Investment Sub-Fund ("the Fund"), has announced it has raised £4 million since its launch in July this year. The Fund, established to invest directly in New Earth Solution Limited's ("NES") recycling and waste management facilities in the UK was set up in conjunction with The Premier Group ("Premier"), the Isle of Man based investment fund provider.
David Whitaker, a Director at Premier said: "We have seen strong appetite to invest in this sector. Investors and their independent financial advisers have been monitoring the market for some time and recognise the potential for good financial returns from the waste and recycling market."
He added: "Over 20 of the leading international life companies and SIPP providers have also come on board since launch and have made the Fund available through their products. We see this as a strong indication of the confidence in the Fund's growth potential".
Adrian Jones, Finance Director at New Earth Solutions said: "We are very encouraged by the growth of the Fund to date. The market drivers behind investing in new methods of tackling waste are only too apparent. It's estimated that UK households sent over 22 million tonnes of rubbish to landfill between 2004 and 2005. That equates to roughly 109 square miles of UK land. In as little as nine years we could run out of landfill space completely if the current trend continues."
"New Earth Solutions already has a plant operating in Dorset and another was commissioned in Kent this month. We aim to build at least 20 waste facilities over the next five years and the Fund will help us to do this. In rolling out new waste facilities we will be supporting local authorities in their obligation to divert waste from landfill and increase levels of recycling and composting across the UK."
The UK is currently the second worst waste offender in Europe with over 75% of all "black bag" waste ending up in landfill sites. Research undertaken by the Local Government Association shows that UK households sent 22.6 million tonnes of rubbish to landfill in 2004/2005 (the most recent year for which compound figures are available across the EU).
The UK waste management industry is facing strict recycling and landfill diversion targets. Local authorities now face restrictions on the amount of biodegradable waste which can be sent to landfill and penalty fines for every tonne in excess of that agreed limit will be strictly imposed. This, coupled with incentives for the recovery of valuable resources and the generation of sustainable energy, presents significant development opportunities to waste management companies and the investment community.
