SSI Schaefer is leading the way with the development and implementation of the SSI Pickomat in the UK, since its launch over three years ago.
A significant amount of Pickomat installations have been completed and supported by Schaefer's Product Manager, David Long. David, an industry leader in the field of automation, is confident that the success of the Pickomat will continue to go from strength to strength with more industries turning towards the innovative system for the storage and accessing of small and medium sized parts.
David says:
"The Pickomat can be used as a stand-alone system for storage, buffering, accessing and order picking. Due to the highly dynamic drive technology using frequency-controlled drives, a trebling of order picking performance can be achieved compared to static systems. The dual staging of containers and materials on the same height level additionally increases efficiency."
The modular design of the Pickomat results in the ideal utilisation of room height up to 13,000mm with the height of material stored varying from a few millimetres up to 730mm. By using the maximum available headroom there is a dramatic recovery of floorspace.
In order to gain efficient space utilisation of the unit, a dynamic storage option is recommended – sensors that automatically register the height of the goods stored and then allocate the ideal storage space. The storage trays used have a net storage surface of 1200mm x 820mm and can be partitioned accordingly or loaded with containers.
The relevant information is provided via a touch screen with a large display and a new, ergonomically arranged user interface. Alphanumerical part numbers or locations can also be entered.
Improved security, due to the enclosed build of the device and improved stock protection against dust, dirt and physical damage are two reasons why the Schaefer Pickomat is now being used in industries such as Pharmaceutical, Engineering Supplies and Spares stores.
A recent user of the Schaefer Pickomat is Stannah Stairlifts Ltd, who decided to install the latest technology in 'vertical lifts' within their spares store to recover space and gain better control over spares stock.
The majority of installations are connected to the users host computer system, allowing the automatic download to the Pickomats IPC of all orders to be picked, providing fast and accurate picking in the minimal amount of floorspace.
