Although many buildings will never have a life-threatening fire, it is essential that fire safety procedures are planned for every building. The design and management of fire safety is an essential element in averting disaster in the event of a fire.
The forthcoming British Standard BS 9999:2008 Code of practice for fire safety in the design, management and use of buildings will supersede the majority of the BS 5588 series of British Standards, the relevant parts of which will then be withdrawn.
To mark the publication of BS 9999, BSI are holding a conference and workshop which will deliver a comprehensive briefing on the new standard and how it can be applied.
Fire Safety in Buildings
BS 9999:2008
12-13 November 2008
15 Hatfields, London, SE1 8DJ
This conference and workshop have been designed to provide an introduction to this new standard for managing fire safety, from the organization that created the standard.
BS 9999:2008 covers the entire lifetime of a building from design to demolition and is applicable to both new and existing buildings. It gives recommendations and guidance on the design, management and use of buildings to achieve reasonable standards of fire safety for all people in and around buildings. Broadly, it covers four main areas: means of escape in case of fire; building construction; access and facilities for fire fighting; and management of fire safety.
Speakers from fire and rescue services, construction bodies, disability and accessibility organizations and standards bodies will outline how BS 9999 can help improve the effective management of fire safety.
Benefits of attending include:
An introduction to the forthcoming standard and information on other existing guidance Updates on legislation and where BS 9999 fits Opportunities to discuss and comment on current issues in fire safety management Best practice advice from industry experts. The conference workshop will offer delegates a hands-on introduction to BS 9999. Led by David Smith, chair of the BSI committee that developed the standard, attendees will be able to access the expert guidance on applying BS 9999.
Given the expected wide adoption of BS 9999, attending this conference will benefit anyone responsible for the design, management and use of buildings, including architects and surveyors, facilities managers, building owners, fire and rescue service professionals, building control officers, risk consultants and safety inspectors.
Both the conference and the workshop will provide delegates from both the public and private sectors the opportunity to network with peers and share problems and solutions.
Delegates will leave this BSI conference with a clearer idea of how their organization's fire safety management strategies and processes could be improved.
