European producer of newsprint, Norske Skog Golbey optimises road transport strategy with Transwide

Norske Skog Golbey paper mill has achieved a two-thirds reduction in transport planning and monitoring time, and 99% customer satisfaction rate since opting for the tried and tested Transwide modular logistics management and planning platform.

Located in eastern France, not far from printing presses and the major commercial publishers, the Norske Skog Golbey paper mill (NSG), a subsidiary of the Norwegian Group, Norske Skogindustrier, delivers 600,000 tonnes of newsprint and receives more than one million tonnes of raw materials (wood and recycled paper) every year. It uses the Transwide modules, twCall-off, twSlot and twTrace, in SaaS mode, to efficiently manage more than 200

lorries every day.

Norske Skog Golbey outsourced the operational management of its road transport needs to Cetrama, a subsidiary of Transports Mauffrey, and implemented Transwide, the best known transport management system on the French market, provided by Wolters Kluwer Transport Services, following a full review of its road transport management strategy in 2010. The review was designed to create the most innovative, profitable and responsible logistics model for delivering its reels of paper, in good time, to its clients worldwide. It showed a clear need to outsource operational management and increase the number of transport partners, while maintaining control of transport purchasing and invoicing, relying on its SAP ERP. Added to this was the need to make the arrival of lorries run more smoothly in order to relieve congestion at the production site and reduce queues.

Transwide's TMS software solution, capable of interfacing in real time with SAP, was crucial to help NSG change the way it was organised. Operational in a matter of weeks, the Transwide solution combines three modules: twCall-off for the electronic communication of transport orders; twSlot, designed to schedule slots with carriers online; and twTrace to track deliveries. Now, NSG's logistics department, Cetrama's employees and the 30 listed carriers use the Transwide solution every day.

"Centralising all the key information and automating all the administrative tasks via a direct link with SAP, the Transwide solution is incredibly easy to use, saves a great deal of time and offers optimum convenience when it comes to managing shipping orders and delivery receipts and optimising the comings and goings of more than 200 trucks. We can now communicate with carriers and generate statistics in just a few clicks," says Franck Royer, who is responsible for transport organisation at Norske Skog Golbey within Cetrama.

At the heart of the new outsourced organisation, the Transwide solution now manages all arrivals and departures for the 30 carriers used by the paper mill site. As well as making these run more smoothly and improving security, it means that NSG can manage, coordinate and secure all road traffic on its site.
