Dexory turns to engineering AI to speed up warehouse robot development

Dexory is using SimScale’s Engineering AI to speed up the design and testing of its autonomous warehouse robots

Dexory is embedding artificial intelligence into the engineering behind its warehouse robots in a move aimed at shortening development times and improving product reliability.

The warehouse robotics and data intelligence company has deployed SimScale’s Engineering AI to automate parts of the simulation process used to design and test its autonomous machines.

The initiative builds on Dexory’s existing use of SimScale’s cloud-based simulation platform.

Engineers will use the technology to identify the causes of structural component failures more quickly, test a wider range of design options and draw on knowledge from earlier projects.

The system is expected to reduce the time spent investigating failures by allowing teams to run more simulation iterations during important stages of development.

It will also automate simulation reports, making results easier to compare, analyse and share across engineering teams.

Dexory plans to use AI agents to run parameter sweeps, where several design variables are tested simultaneously without each simulation being configured manually.

The results will allow engineers to compare alternative designs and assess how changes could affect performance.

Knowledge from previous simulation projects will also be captured in a searchable database.

The aim is to help engineers reuse proven methods, preserve technical expertise and avoid repeating work as the company expands.

Dexory said the programme was not solely focused on improving productivity.

It will also examine where AI agents can provide the greatest value across mechanical engineering and product development, helping the business establish guidelines for their wider use.

Calum MacDougall, senior mechanical design engineer at Dexory, said the engineering industry was still determining where AI could have the biggest impact.

“AI has a ‘blank sheet of paper’ problem in engineering because we’re still discovering where it can create the greatest value,” he said.

“This pilot isn't just about solving today's engineering challenges. It's about understanding how AI will reshape engineering over the coming years and helping us discover where it can genuinely transform the way engineers work.”

The project reflects a wider shift in manufacturing, with businesses using AI not only in finished products but also throughout the processes used to design, simulate and optimise them.

This is becoming increasingly important as engineering teams face pressure to bring new products to market more quickly without compromising performance or safety.

The global warehouse robotics market is projected to grow from $14.7 billion in 2024 to $117 billion by 2034, according to figures cited in the announcement.

David Heiny, chief executive of SimScale, said many engineering businesses were still deciding how to incorporate AI into their workflows.
