Demag Cranes and Components Ltd wins acclaimed safety award

Employees from a design, manufacturing and istallation of material handling equipment organisation based in Banbury joined top names in the health and safety industry to receive an accolade praised by Prime Minister Gordon Brown.

Following tough independent adjudication, Demag Cranes & Components Ltd was given an International Safety Award from leading training and advisory body, the British Safety Council. This award has been achieved by Demag Cranes & Components Ltd for 6 consecutive years.

Over 1,000 movers and shakers from a diverse range of sectors celebrated their achievements at a ceremony and banquet at London's prestigious Grosvenor House Hotel, London on Friday 16 May 2008.

Guests at the banquet, which included a number of international winners, were treated to fabulous cabaret featuring the best of the best acts from the last 50 years including Paul Zerdin, Moulin Rouge dancers and an amazing display of indoor fireworks and lasers as part of an outstanding night of music and entertainment.

Prime Minister Gordon Brown added his support: "I am delighted to send my congratulations to all of those organisations being presented with an award by the British Safety Council. These awards recognise the crucial success that these organisations and their employees have achieved in their pursuit of excellence in the management of health, safety and environmental matters at an international level. The event provides an opportunity to publicly recognise the important contribution made by the British Safety Council in promoting health, safety and environmental best practice. I would like to place on record my appreciation of the support given by the Council in raising public awareness of the benefits effective health, safety and environmental management brings to business, employees, the environment and the economy as a whole. I am confident that by continuing to work in partnership with you, employers and employees we can tackle the many challenges we face to achieve a healthier, safer and sustainable society. We will strive to accomplish our goals in reducing the burden on employers and employees and cutting the 36 million working days currently lost each year through work-related ill-health and injury."

Winners must have good safety policies, plans and commitment to health and safety at the highest level and also be endeavouring to improve the safety culture within their organisation. They must detail their health and safety officers' qualifications and provide information about significant advances they have made in health and safety for the year.

Mr Brian Nimick, Chief Executive of the British Safety Council, says: "For more than 50 years, we have led the way in promoting health, safety and environmental best practice in society. In the 21st century, many organisations worldwide are now making health and safety a top priority. Through achieving an International Safety Award, Demag Cranes & Components Ltd is helping to make our vision of a safe working environment a reality."
