Avery Weigh-Tronix is showcasing its new Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) technology at CIWM 2007, which is designed to improve the speed, ease and accuracy of weighbridge data collection for waste operators. Visitors to stand number T76 can also view the company's Weighman weighbridge software, a compactor usage monitoring system and its forklift truck scale.
Automatic Number Plate Recognition Technology
Developed in conjunction with ADT, the UK's leading provider of electronic fire and security solutions, the ANPR system is a closed circuit television (CCTV)-based application that uses specialist cameras to identify, log and monitor vehicle number plates.
When used as part of a weighbridge system, the vehicle will approach the 'bridge to be weighed and the camera will record its registration number. This is converted into an ASCII file and, once it is recognised by the system, the vehicle will be weighed and processed. On exiting the site, the ANPR will identify the registration number again and the weighbridge will capture the empty vehicle weight so that the amount of waste it tipped can be calculated.
Comments Campbell Deas, general manager for transport at Avery Weigh-Tronix, "In the era of the Landfill Allowance Tax, waste has to be traceable so organisations involved in disposal must be certain about the type of waste being tipped, where it comes from and how much is in each load. Developments such as ANPR technology automate data entry for simpler and faster operation, helping to minimise input errors and reduce vehicle queuing times."
Weighman Software
Waste operators keen to improve the management of weighbridge data whilst maximising vehicle throughput can view a working demonstration of Weighman, a Windows-based software system that captures and manages essential data, quickly and efficiently.
The system requires only minimal data entry, which helps reduce input error and ensures a fast and efficient operation. Short cut keys and storage of frequently recalled information such as vehicle tare weights, customer and haulier data can be set up easily.
Unmanned sites and driver-operated consoles can capture data via swipe card or simple key press allowing the system to be used out of hours. The system can incorporate additional security such as traffic lights, barriers and video surveillance. It can integrate with most manufacturers' indicators, weighing devices and printers making it easy to install into new or existing operations.
Compactor Usage Monitoring System
The compactor usage monitoring system is designed for sites that house multiple businesses such as airports, shopping centres and office blocks. It weighs and records each user's waste disposal and, as a Weights and Measures verified system, can charge each business appropriately.
Typically, a user accesses the compactor system with a swipe card. The bin is loaded onto the automatic hoist, weighed, emptied and then reweighed to establish a net weight of the content emptied. Other information captured by the system includes operator and company identity and the date and time of use. The Windows-based software can record and display the information on a central PC and can link to other software for data analysis and invoicing.
ForkLift Truck Scale Avery Weigh-Tronix's onboard forklift truck scale helps operators in the waste and recycling sector to validate the weight of a palletised load, quickly and accurately and without the driver needing to leave the safety of the cab.
The Avery Weigh-Tronix system transforms lift trucks into mobile scales that deliver trade approved weight verification of each pallet as it is picked up – so an organisation can now lift, weigh, move and invoice loads within its existing process.
The system can guide the driver through the loading process to maximise capacity for outward-bound trailers. Correct loading avoids health and safety hazards, fines and the expense of incident cleanups. For outward-bound vehicles, printed proof of due diligence proves that the vehicle is fit to travel in the event of a roadside spot check.
