DPD National Manager wins Young Manager of the Year
Tom Dovey, National Trunking Manager of West Midlands based national parcel delivery company, DPD, beat off the competition to take the much coveted prize of Young Manager of the Year at CILT's Annual Awards for Excellence.
Tom Dovey received his Young Manager of the Year award from Institute Patron, HRH The Princess Royal, and the award sponsor, Wincanton plc.
National Trucking Manager for DPD, Tom Dovey has identified and delivered several crucial operational improvements, resulting in millions of pounds worth of efficiency savings. Responsible for 410 drivers and with 8 direct reports, Tom is known for his logical and yet imaginative approach. Tom's significant achievements include site integrations, smarter resource management and technology implementations. His new route optimisation tool delivered savings of over £1m in the first year and removed the need for any redundancies through the recent recession. With a commitment to his personal development, including two years working in France, Tom has propelled through the organisation, making a real difference.

Hutchison Ports (UK) Limited receive award for Information Management
Hutchison Ports (UK) Limited, who have ports in Felixstowe, Harwich and London, beat off strong competition to take the much coveted award for Information Management at CILT's Annual Awards for Excellence.
Representatives from Hutchison Ports (UK) Limited received their Information Management award from Institute Patron, HRH The Princess Royal, and the award sponsor Unipart Logistics.
Hutchison Ports (UK) Limited has met the challenge of matching customer needs with transport requirements. A large vessel may discharge 3000 containers; a major challenge for transport departments and a major opportunity to avoid 'empty running' costs. Their PARIS transport planning system matches import deliveries with export collections, optimizes road routings and monitors the results. The system uses a real time algorithm, enhanced by the planners' knowledge captured during the implementation. Daily load matching has risen from 5% to 30%. There have been significant savings in planning personnel; in inbound transport and in empty container handling.

Kimberly-Clark Director Peter Surtees wins premier CILT award for outstanding achievement
Director, European Supply Chain for Kimberly-Clark Limited, Peter Surtees FCILT, is this year's recipient of The Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport's (CILT) prestigious Sir Robert Lawrence Lifetime Achievement Award 2010.
The Sir Robert Lawrence Lifetime Achievement Award was presented on Thursday evening (7th October) at the Institute's glittering Annual Awards ceremony at the London Marriott Hotel, celebrating all that is best in the supply chain and transport profession.
The Institute gives the Sir Robert Lawrence Award annually to an individual who has made a sustained contribution to logistics and transport - that is something which can definitely be said about the recipient of this year's award.
Born in Newcastle UK in 1959, Peter spent his childhood & teens in Africa, returning to the UK to complete his education. His early career was spent in the 3PL industry working for a range of companies including Sutton & Sons, Robson's Border Transport, UCI Logistics and NYK.
Joining Kimberly-Clark in 1994, originally as a logistics buyer, a poacher come gamekeeper position, he has since held a number of key positions within Kimberly-Clark's supply chain organisation culminating in his current role as Director European Supply Chain. Peter is responsible for Kimberly-Clark's physical logistics operations, sales and operations planning, customer service and demand planning organisations in Western & Central Europe, and leads the Order to Cash and Forecast to Stock process streams.
Peter has pioneered effective collaboration between CPG companies for many years, and unlike those who have simply talked about it, he has successfully led large scale collaboration projects with Unilever and Kellogg's - where major infrastructure investments including design and build of combined/multi user warehousing projects and shared distribution fleets.
He is a founding Board member of ELUPEG (European Logistics, Users, Providers & Enablers Group), sits on the UK ECR group and is an active member of a number of diverse industry groups promoting collaboration and supply chain innovation.
Peter's vision, tenacity and his desire to innovate has enabled him to deliver significant and complex projects delivering very significant cost savings and service improvements.
His wide experience of both 3PL and in-house logistics operations has seen him pioneer in-sourced 4PL activities into a unique award winning European shared service centre in Brighton where the key components of the perfect order - manufacturing planning, inventory deployment, customer service and transport planning are seated together by country. Having 'wrung' the maximum benefit from this business model Peter has moved to leverage the KCE supply chain by putting it into a purpose built 4PL vehicle to leverage volume across other CPG companies in Europe.
Peter's vision & infectious enthusiasm to constantly strive for ever more efficiencies & cost reductions has truly changed the face of the European CPG supply chain for the better.
Peter was presented with the award by the Institute's Patron, HRH The Princess Royal.

Samsung and NYK Logistics (UK) Ltd stood out from some high-quality competition to take the much coveted prize for Logistics Best Practice at CILT's Annual Awards for Excellence.
The Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport in the UK (CILT) celebrated some great achievements by supply chain, passenger transport and planning professionals at this year's sold-out Annual Awards for Excellence Dinner on Thursday evening. The winners were announced at a prestigious event held at The London Marriott Hotel, Grosvenor Square, attended by over 500 guests.
Representatives from Samsung and NYK Logistics (UK) Ltd received their Logistics Best Practice award from Institute Patron, HRH The Princess Royal, and the award sponsor Road Haulage Association.

Seachill and Zetes receive top award for Materials Handling Equipment & Technology
Seachill and Zetes beat off some fierce competition to take the much coveted prize for Materials Handling Equipment & Technology at CILT's Annual Awards for Excellence.
Representatives from Seachill and Zetes received the Materials Handling Equipment & Technology award from Institute Patron, HRH The Princess Royal, and the award sponsor, CHEP.
The Seachill objective, to improve shipping and despatch processes, was successfully achieved through an effective and innovative system to meet the increased demand from Tesco who required a Sort Order Lead Time (SOLT). This changed the single time of order from 6.00am to multiple times - 6.00am, 10.00am and 10.00pm. Seachill needed to find a system which could accommodate the SOLT and at the same time reduce errors and make the picking and dispatch process more efficient. The process from Zetes with a Visidot Reader simultaneously scans hundreds of assets in a single pass, and successfully reduced claims significantly despite a major increase in volume.

Representatives from DHL Supply Chain in partnership with Jaguar Land Rover received their Safety award from Institute Patron, HRH The Princess Royal, and the award sponsor NYK Logistics.
DHL supply chain for manufacturing logistics services set out their vision of being recognised as best in class and to achieve a 'target zero' safety culture. This provided the foundation for the implementation of a significant number of safety initiatives from newsletters and 'toilet talk' through to investment in accredited training from the Institute of Occupational Safety and Health and the implementation of technology such as 'traka i-fob impact shock sensor system'. Clear evidence supported the entry showing a reduction in the top three injury categories as well as cost benefits and operating improvements.
