£20.5m Bidfood distribution hub opens in County Durham

Spanning 86,098 sq ft, the site has been designed to support the demands of modern food supply chains

A new ÂŁ20.5 million distribution hub has opened in County Durham, boosting food logistics capacity across the North East.

The temperature-controlled facility, developed by Glencar for foodservice provider Bidfood, is now fully operational at Chester-le-Street and will serve as the company’s regional hub.

Spanning 86,098 sq ft, the site has been designed to support the demands of modern food supply chains, with a mix of cold storage, chilled space and ambient warehousing.

This includes 23,628 sq ft of cold store, 8,833 sq ft of chilled marshalling space and 3,114 sq ft of chill store, alongside office space and a dedicated transport hub.

The development also features a large external yard, EV charging infrastructure, 198 car parking spaces and 50 cycle bays, reflecting a focus on efficiency and long-term sustainability.

Glencar delivered the project alongside infrastructure improvements, including works to enhance access to the surrounding road network.

The company said the scheme was completed on schedule through a collaborative approach between the project partners.

It marks the second project Glencar has delivered for Bidfood, following a distribution facility in Worcester completed in 2025.

Tom Kearsley, North regional director at Glencar, said the build demonstrates the firm’s capability in delivering specialist logistics sites.

He said the project shows “a shared focus on quality, programme certainty and operational performance”.

Bidfood said the new site will strengthen its operations in the region, allowing it to improve efficiency and support future growth.

Construction and property manager David Foreman said the company was “delighted” to work with Glencar again, describing the site as a “flagship facility for the Northeast”.

He added that the development will help “consolidate services, improve efficiency and support future growth”.

The hub is expected to play a key role in expanding Bidfood’s logistics network, providing additional capacity as demand across the region continues to grow.
